COPYWRITING AND CONTENT WRITING TIPS FOR PURPOSE-DRIVEN BRANDS

Improve your website copy right now (5 tips)

One of the most common questions I get is “How can I improve my website copy right now?”

You might not be quite ready to work with a copywriter on new website copy, but that doesn’t mean you don’t want to have the best DIY copy possible in the meantime.

And because it’s Valentine’s Day and I love you all, I’m going to give your five tips to improve your website copy immediately.

These are five easy tweaks you can make in under an hour to make your website more effective when it comes to informing, educating, and persuading your readers to work with or buy from you.

Here are five easy ways to improve your website copy right now:

1. Rewrite your headlines

Headlines are the most powerful pieces of text on your website. I’ve said it before and you’ll probably see me say it again. Tweaking your headlines is a quick way to improve your website copy immediately.

To write strong headlines, you should answer the following questions:

  • What results do you provide (the benefits of your product or service)
  • Who do you provide these results for (your target audience)
  • How do you provide these results (your product or service)

You don’t have to cram all that information into one line. Make use of subheadings and even eyebrow copy (a brief line above everything).

2. Take out wordy jargon

You want to make reading your copy and content easy for your reader. If they have to slog through what you’ve written, they’ll probably give up and leave your site or social.

Ask a friend who isn’t in your industry to read through your site. Have them point out any sections that are wordy or include too much industry jargon. Then rewrite it in a way they can more easily read.

3. Break up large paragraphs

Trust me when I say that no one wants to read through a big wall of text. One of the easiest ways to improve your website copy immediately is to break up those big paragraphs.

When I write website copy for my clients, I write a lot of paragraphs that are one to two sentences only. Forget everything your high school English teacher told you. You can also make sure of bullet points and lists for greater readability.

4. Make use of negative space

Give your paragraphs, headlines, and subheadlines space to breathe on the page. Make use of negative space and leave ample space between sentences, paragraphs, and sections.

When you do this it becomes easier to read, follow, and understand what you’re saying. I made the mistake with my first website and shoved everything close together, and guess what? It was impossible to read.

5. Use irresistible calls to action

One final way to improve your website copy immediately is to use calls to action that entice the reader into clicking. Don’t just say “Sign up.” Instead, write something specific like “Get 100 more clients today.”

Instead of “Contact Me,” write “Take the first step to success.” You get the picture.
